Introduction to your subject
Subject Leader – Mrs Bickersteth
The Modern Foreign Languages department is committed to giving students the opportunity to discover new cultures through an enjoyable experience of learning a foreign language. We believe that the study of a foreign language helps students develop a sense of cultural pluralism, an openness to and appreciation of other cultures. In a globalised world characterised by international links and intercultural connections, linguistic skills are crucial for employment and career as proficiency in a foreign language enhances career opportunities. Beacon Hill Community School MFL department encourages students to progress in all four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing while bringing languages alive though a range of interactive and varied lessons.
Intent
At Beacon Hill Community the MFL curriculum across Key Stage 3 and 4 provides students with the opportunity to study a wide range of language, increasing their knowledge of vocabulary and set phrases while at the same time building their understanding of structures and how language works. This is achieved through the study and development of written and spoken language. Students are able to express their opinions on a variety of topic areas relevant to their everyday lives. Skilful application occurs when students can articulate their ideas either verbally or written through authentic use of the language they have studied. Students are also able to develop the concept of being a global citizen by increasing their understanding of the cultures where the languages are spoken.
